Trewern within the Local Community

We try to be sensitive to the feelings and views of those that live around us and the impact our activities have on the local environment. We are keen play an active role within our community. Our staffing is very stable and we all live within a few miles of the Centre.

The Community

We have held open days to allow people living locally to come and see what we do. Our recent 40th Anniversary Celebrations were well attended and provided an ideal opportunity for our staff and officers from Barking and Dagenham to meet our neighbours. The opening of the new climbing wall to the local community during the evenings has also helped forge stronger links. Of particular note is the recently established young persons climbing club. These sessions have been well attended by parents and young people from Hay-on-Wye and the surrounding villages. We have also had firm bookings from local youth and Scout groups.

Most of the food purchased by the Centre is sourced locally. Our adult weekend users are frequent visitors to the restaurants and public houses within Hay-on-Wye.

The environment

We are actively engaged in working on environmental issues. We hope to gain our eco-centre flag this year. We are members of two National Park Working groups, one looking at environmental issues associated with gorge walking. The other is concerned with environmental and safety issues within the Ysradfellte Waterfall area. We are active members of the Wye Usk foundation which is concerned with access and conservation on these rivers. In recent years staff from the Centre have been involved in litter clearance along the River Wye at Llowes. We have recently started a tree planting project. Visiting schools will work with us as we plant of native deciduous trees within our own grounds. In the months before Chistmas we built and erected a large number of bat boxes within the Centre grounds.
